“I donate to charity mostly for the tax breaks and I’m going to donate less now that the deal looks worse for me” is probably near the top of the list of things rich people would do better just keeping to themselves.

Always glad to hear that wealthy people only donate insofar as it benefits them.  Do people in this mindset not realize that perhaps the reason people less wealthy than them could use some philanthropic assistance via 501(c)(3) organizations is because the tax code and government services don’t sufficiently benefit them?

Woman finds note from Chinese labor camp prisoner in Kmart decorations ↘

Oregon resident Julie Keith was shocked when she opened her $29.99 Kmart Halloween graveyard decoration kit to find a letter, folded into eights, hidden between two Styrofoam tombstones.

Coming all the way from unit 8, department 2 of the Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang, China, the letter written mostly in English read,

"Sir: If you occasionally buy this product, please kindly resend this letter to the World Human Right Organization. Thousands people here who are under the persicution of the Chinese Communist Party Government will thank and remember you forever."

Please share this story.  I think we all need to think about the human cost of our consumption.

Gang-raped Indian Teenager Kills Herself ↘

kalisherni:

A 17-year-old Indian girl who was gang-raped killed herself after police pressured her to drop the case and marry one of her attackers, police and a relative said on Thursday.

Amid the ongoing uproar over the gang-rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi earlier this month, the latest case has again shone the spotlight on the police’s handling of sex crimes.

One police officer has been sacked and another suspended over their conduct after the assault during the festival of Diwali on November 13 in the Patiala region in the Punjab, according to officials.

The teenager was found dead on Wednesday night after swallowing poison.

Her death came as it emerged that the names, addresses and photographs of convicted rapists will be posted online by police in India to publicly shame them for their crimes.

Inspector General Paramjit Singh Gill said that the teenager had been “running from pillar to post to get her case registered” but officers failed to open a formal inquiry.

“One of the officers tried to convince her to withdraw the case,” Gill, the police chief for the area, told AFP.

Before her death, there had been no arrests over her case although three people were detained on Thursday. Two of them were her alleged male attackers and the third was a suspected woman accomplice.

The victim’s sister told Indian television that the teenager had been urged to either accept a cash settlement or marry one of her attackers.

“The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them,” her sister told the NDTV network.

Gunmen kill 6 anti-polio workers in Pakistan. Taliban claims vaccinators are spies. #whataworld

We as a nation are hurting, and we have to remember that communities all over the world suffer from disaster and violence more often than we do.  Over 1000 people have been killed in Typhoon Bopha this month in the Phillippines; a woman was gang raped on a bus in Delhi; bombs in northern Iraq have killed 25 people this week; a pig farmer’s murders of 49 women, mostly indigenous, in Canada a decade ago went unnoticed due to police bias.  No one is an island, and we have to look outward as well as inward.

Sunday’s New York Times front page does something the paper of record has rarely, if ever, done before: It leads with a black box rather than an image, with zero photos taking up the top half of the page. It also downplays the suspect significantly. (ht @thomaskaplan)

I have heard that behavioral psychologists advocate that in order to prevent glorification of mass violence to potential perpetrators, news agencies need to let  the affected communities grieve in private and limit attention given to the shooter.  Television news coverage has been a theatre of grotesque exploitation of Newtown’s pain this weekend; I’m glad the New York Times is taking a different approach.

Power, Pollution, and the Internet: Data Centers Waste Vast Amounts of Energy, Belying Industry Image ↘

Of all the things the Internet was expected to become, it is safe to say that a seed for the proliferation of backup diesel generators was not one of them.

Running the Internet requires an unfathomable amount of energy.  This isn’t a matter of everyone cleaning out inboxes and slimming down their Facebook profiles; millions of servers need to be cooled and ready to process information instantly every time a consumer buys something, uploads vacation photos, or watches a cat video - and companies aren’t doing this efficiently.

Because sometimes weird things happen in my state and we don’t talk about them enough, apparently a paper mill in East Millinocket reopened after being closed for years (a constant problem in the motherland) in order to supply paper for the 50 Shades series for Random House.  My favorite moment is around 5:13 when the town selectman says, “Who knows, maybe we can land the Bible next time.”

The fragile weave of natural sound is being torn apart by our seemingly boundless need to conquer the environment rather than to find a way to abide in consonance with it.

Tomorrow, a 100 year old mysterious package, its content unknown, will be opened in a museum in Norway. ↘

awesomearchives:

Reddit thread on it here. Video, in Norwegian, here.

There will be a live stream from the event from here

The package originated from John Nygaard, who was a protruding character in the documenting and celebration of the wars in the nordics in the years from 1612.

There has been guessing about its content, spanning from oil shares to benefit the community, secret documents, or even the “Blue Star” diamond from HMS Titanic.

The package has made it through two world wars, as well as as being thrown in the garbage, where it was found and recovered by city council personnel.

Aww oh my goodness.  That tiger is having NONE OF THIS and is NOT HERE FOR kiddie pools.  But look how sad it looks here!  And how cute and playful it is here!  I just want to give it catnip and a very large ball of yarn to calm it down and then we can go roam the streets together, maybe chase some teenagers.  Get ice cream.  Watch the Olympics.

Praying for the people attacked while they worshiped in Wisconsin today.  There is a jumble of words in me that won’t come out about religious intolerance and terrorism, but all I can say is that I hope the community can find strength, and that those wounded—physically and emotionally—can, in time, heal.  This is barbaric.

I saw this in the newspaper while eating breakfast and was just like

The victim may have been a homeless man and his face is basically gone.  :(  I hope he can be helped.  This incident is also being linked to bath salts, which happens to be a growing drug problem in Maine, too.
